Summer Youth Session 2

July 15-19, 2024

Each summer, Colaisde na Gàidhlig welcomes students from around the world for the Summer School multidisciplinary and immersion programming. With a wide range of disciplines offered, students ages 5-18 can spend a week, or two, studying the music, dance, language, and crafts of Nova Scotia Gaels. Stay on campus with us, or come as a day student… specialize in your chosen subject, or try your hand at a whole variety! With 5 classes a day, you’d be surprised with how much you can learn in just a week.

Students choosing to live-in on campus for the week will arrive Sunday evening between 6pm - 8pm for registration and room assignment. (If you have a preference for roommates, please specify in registration process) There will be no supper provided although a wee night lunch is served in the evening. Students will settle in and meet some of the house parents (during youth weeks), staff, and new faces that night, then be off to bed at either 9pm (for those between 5 and 9) or 10pm (for those 10 to 18). Lights out on campus at 10:30pm. For adults attending, no such rulings apply. Please note: as of 2022, students are required to bring their own bedding and towels.

Outside of keyboards, some chanters which can be borrowed, and our new fiddle loan program ($15/week to borrow fiddle on-site) students are to provide their own instruments, ready in good condition for learning. Monday morning begins with breakfast between 7:30am - 8:30am, with day students able to register between 8am - 8:30am. All will gather in MacKenzie Hall for a welcome, overview, and introduction to instructors at 8:45am, then we're off and running to classes which start at 9:00am. Each class is 50 minutes, and there are 5 a day. We have a short break in the morning from 10:50 to 11:10, and then break at 12pm for lunch, and wrap up class at 3:20pm. The evenings are filled with fun activities like jam sessions, games, ceilidhs, outdoor activities, and more. For the final Friday, we'll have two shortened classes in the afternoon to leave time for a big square set to conclude the week. Parents can arrive at 3pm for this, with a 3:30pm scheduled end time.
