Morganne Layton Spooney

Highland Dance

Morganne started highland dancing at the age of 7 with the Campbell School of Highland dance. She danced competitively for over 20 years under the direction of Karenanne Peck, later assisting and learning to teach and pass on her love of dance along side her amazing Mentor and friend for more than 10 years. She was a member of the Damsha Breacon dance troupe travelling, performing and volunteering through out the Maritimes. Morganne had many opportunities to compete throughout North America; she represented her province at the Canadian championships for several years, was a runner up in the North American Championships and at 17 she reached her goal of traveling to Scotland to compete in the Junior World Qualifiers, which ultimately ended with her injured and touring around Scotland on crutches instead of dancing. This experience led Morganne to pursue her studies in Kinesiology and became a Certified Athletic Therapist in 2014. While living in Winnipeg, to expand her education and work hours as a new grad, she had opportunities to work with Usports, Olympic athletes, covered training camps in the CFL and NHL and volunteered with the RWB dance program. Morganne travelled throughout North America for team coverage and ultimately return to Cape Breton to start her family. Over the last six years she has returned to pursuing her passions, creating her own business training Dancers of all genres in Movement and High Performance. Morganne holds her Members with the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance, is a professional member with ScotDance Canada and is the current Provincial Competition Organizer for SDNS. In 2020 she began her own Highland Dance school, Kaye Murray Highland Dancers, in honor of her Grammie Kaye who was her favorite person. Morganne thoroughly enjoyed her years as a student at the GC in the late 90s and is excited to return to the campus and share her passion for highland dance and healthy movement. Play More. Move More. Be More.
