THE EMIGRANT EXPERIENCE - Sister Margaret MacDonell

Seo agaibh cliath-dhuilleag eile a tha a-nis ri faighinn air Google Sheets / We have just uploaded another of our spreadsheets to Google Sheets: https://docs.google.com/.../10M7rhPKFhVlF_IB.../edit...

This week we are celebrating the work of Dr. Sr. Margaret MacDonell CND, a Gaelic speaker, sister and scholar from Judique, Cape Breton. Her collection of Gaelic poems from the North America - The Emigrant Experience - is a key text in the canon of Gaelic emigrant literature.

Sister Margaret holds a B.A. from StFX University and a PhD from Harvard University in Celtic Languages and Literatures. She was head of the Department of Celtic Studies at St Francis Xavier University for many years and celebrated her 100th birthday on December 13th 2020.

Sister Margaret grew up with a deep, innate knowledge of her native language and culture. She has committed much of her life to the preservation and elevation of the language and has taught and encouraged numerous students to become Gaelic speakers and community leaders.

We would like to join many others in thanking Sister Margaret for her work in support of Gaelic, and in particularly for The Emigrant Experience which has been a vital source for building our database.
