Kathleen Reddy was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and has family roots in Cape Breton and Antigonish counties. Kathleen was aware as she was growing up that Gaelic was the language of her heritage, despite the fact that the only Gaelic she heard was in songs on the radio. Her interest in traditional music and culture drew her to learn her ancestral language as a student at St.FX, and a university scholarship enabled her to spend a month in Scotland learning Gaelic at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic College in Skye, and on the Isle of South Uist. As a result of this experience, she enrolled at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where she qualified as a Gaelic teacher. She has taught Gaelic in Uist, Halifax, and most recently at St. F.X. University in Antigonish.
