Patrick Gillis

Guitar Accompaniment

Guitarist Patrick Gillis grew up listening to traditional music in his childhood home in Scotsville, Cape Breton. His father, uncle, and brothers all play the fiddle and share a great love of the music. Patrick began to play the guitar as a young boy. Because he is left-handed and did not have access to a left-handed guitar, Patrick taught himself to play the instrument upside-down and backwards. However, that has not stopped him from excelling at the guitar. He has become one of the most sought after guitar players in Cape Breton.

He has performed with many of Cape Breton’s finest musicians, including Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, and Glenn Graham. He has toured the United States with the group Cullin, and was a prominent performer in Howie MacDonald’s “Celtic Brew.” Patrick is also well known as the guitar player for the popular Cape Breton group, Beòlach. He has made two recordings with that group, including Beòlach in 2002, and Variations in 2004. During his music career, Patrick has performed in concerts and festivals across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
