Otis Tomas

For the last thirty years Otis has been working as a violin and guitar maker at his home in the hills above St. Ann’s Bay on Cape Breton Island. Although he specializes primarily in violins and secondarily in guitars, he has on occasion also turned his hand to mandolins, harps, and various other stringed instruments. Otis’s instruments are all individually crafted, one at a time, with care and respect – based on original designs, but built with an eye to the deep traditions that inform the luthier’s art. In conjunction with his work creating instruments Otis has published three books, ‘The Fiddletree’, ‘The Unfathomable Menagerie’ and ‘The Fiddletree Collection’.
