Màiri McCarron

Gaelic Language

Màiri McCarron was born and raised in Antigonish County, with deeply rooted family connections with Scottish Gaelic culture. Her great-grandparents were naive speakers from Cape George and the Keppoch, and her family can trace their ancestry back to Mòrar Scotland. Màiri began learning the language as a student at StFX University. While studying at StFX, she received the Celtic Travel Bursary to attend a summer program at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye. Màiri also had the opportunity to attend An Cùrsa Bogaidh, the month-long immersion program at Colaisde na Gàidhlig, where her language skills and ability to converse deepened greatly, and she made lifelong friends and connections with other people in the Gaelic community. Màiri is now a Gaelic language teacher, and has been teaching at HM MacDonald Elementary, St. Andrew’s Consolidated, and the Antigonish Education Centre for the past three years, where she shares her passion for the Gaelic language and culture with children in her home community.
