Carmen MacArthur lives in Gillisdale, Nova Scotia. Originally from Pictou County, she became interested in Gaelic culture during a gap year as a L’Arche assistant in Whycocomagh. She studied Gaelic at St. F.X. University in Antigonish, then travelled to Memorial University in Newfoundland to take an MA in Folklore. She currently teaches Gaelic classes for adults from her home, and instructs at Cape Breton University in Sydney.
